I love seeing these premium cars being built in China. The Buick Envision has been selling well and anything that isn’t a Volvo XC model will likely be built in China. So how do you feel about the US receiving cars we would normally miss out on by building them in China? Can anything be built anywhere without YOUR disapproval as long as the quality is great?

Next gen Mustang Convertible?

Wagon variants of the Fusion Energi, Optima Hybrid, and Mazda6 Hybrid?

All FCA small cars?

Specific models from Jeep, BMW, Toyota, Tesla, Lamborghini, Rolls Royce?

The entire Buick lineup plus a few Cadillacs?

Sportscars and exotics?

Of the cars are good does the origin matter?

Sportscars and exotics?

Nope. They’re exempted. Those have got to be built in the marque’s country of origin.

The NSX is from Ohio. Sad!

I want that ATS-L. Complete with a manual. That solves the complaint about the ATS being cramped. I don’t mind the other LWB variants too, 328Li, A4L, etc.

When you buy a luxury item you don’t mind paying extra, because it is supposed to ensure that the manufacturer spent a little extra dough to provide a quality product. Quality isn’t the only factor, as luxury items appeal to a much more emotional side of consumers. When I spend a lot of money on a luxury item, I like to know a little bit about the history and practices of the people making it. I’m not dropping a grand on a Timex, even if it is a quality Timex. The only reason these cars are being built in China is because it is the cheapest way to manufacture them. That’s fine for a budget focused automobile, but not when you’re paying for a luxury item. There’s a reason people still buy Swiss watches when there are cheaper alternatives that can now achieve the same level of quality.

I would never buy a Chinese made car. Only reason they’d be built in China is because the manufacturer is too cheap to have them built elsewhere.

I’ll put it here outright. If the next ATS/CTwhatever:

- Backports Omega improvements to Alpha
- Address the poor transmission concerns
- Take the Escala body and put it on the compact chassis
- KEEP the 6MT option with a 2.0L and make it available with the 3.6L
- DITCH CUE IN ITS CURRENT FORM

...I will trade Valka in. But knowing Cadillac they will not do it and build more Escalades with crappy interiors, with less funding going towards cars. But if they build the said car and I don’t buy it, come back and grill me.

What are they then? My definition of a sports car has always been a small, nimble coupe.

Ain’t nothing small about Z4's. Cruiser, like the SL, CGT vert, even the Buick thingy. No emphasis on sport.

I mean, they’re definitely heavy, but they’re not that much longer than a Miata.

In my defense, I own a Town Car and an XJ8L, so my sense for what’s small is very skewed.

Sure, the Envision is selling decent (just under 8,500 in it’s first six months with only top trim versions offered at the moment), but it’s still getting poor reviews and that dashboard layout is horrendous. Who’s bright idea was it to set the A/C vents so low?

Fortunately, it’s not all bad when it comes to Chinese made cars, as opposed to the Envision, Volvo’s S60L has gotten some good reviews, with build quality being quite similar to it’s European built SWB brothers (I forgot whether the US gets S60s from Sweden or Belgium...).

Even then, I still don’t see why they can’t just build the CT6 PHEV in the same plant at the regular CT6, considering the Volt is built there, and shares a similar drive unit as the Volt.

Ultimately it comes down to your personal priorities, right? (And that’s ok!)

If your car’s country of origin (country of assembly?) is important enough to you because of tradition, working conditions, wages paid to the assemblers, feelings (accurate or not) about business practices, etc, then you’ll spend your money accordingly.

If you have other priorities - low(er) prices being the most obvious, but there could be plenty of other factors - then you might not think twice about the country of origin.

Then again, this is Oppo, so the right answer is either Miata or a brown, manual, diesel wagon with plaid seats, even if assembled in R’lyeh.
